Moodboard: PURL Winter 2026 (Hands)
Share

Hands are integral to knitting and for PURL’s second issue, we want to explore all the ways this is true. The most obvious is how we use our hands for knitting. Let’s dig into all the different styles and methods of knitting, both left-handed and right-handed. How do we hold our needles and our yarn? What are the pros and cons of the different ways? Where did they originate from and what’s their historical relevance? Are some more ergonomic than others? Are some faster or more efficient? Are there methods that are best for some types of knitting but not for others?
What about caring for our hands so that we have years of comfortable knitting ahead? Do you have insights into injury prevention or recovery?
Finally, let’s delve into all the things we can knit for our hands. What considerations are there when knitting gloves, mitts, and mittens? Is there a yarn style or fiber type that makes the warmest gloves? What stitch patterns stand up the best to constant wear and tear? Which cast ons and bind offs work best for people with larger hands or smaller hands?
If it’s got to do with hands, we want to hear about it!
