WEFT is hiring!

Want to work for a great fiber magazine?

WEFT Magazine has an opening! We are looking for a draft maker! We have a process in place and examples of how we want the drafts to look, we just need somebody to create (or recreate) them for each issue.

Position Details

This is a freelance, satellite position that is ongoing and includes 4 issues per year. It pays hourly and we predict it will take between 15 and 30 hours each issue (over a 3-month period) for which we are offering US$40/hour.

You’ll be responsible for recreating drafts that have been made by a variety of people so they all look consistent in the issue. We have a system and process in place for this along with clear steps that include exactly what the final drafts should look like. WEFT is a small team consisting of the director, managing editor, tech editor, content editor, photographer, creative director, customer service, illustrator, and you. That’s it. Among all of us, we get everything done.

You’ll be responsible for the following (while meeting the deadlines given):

  • Creating and recreating drafts to match our standard and look.
  • Making any required changes to drafts.
  • Working with director and managing editor on drafts needed for each issue.
  • Using adobe illustrator to create drafts.
  • Delivering .ai to managing editor and then implementing any changes requested.
  • Uploading final drafts to appropriate folders in teams.

You should:

  • Have an understanding of weaving and weaving drafts.
  • Be comfortable and well-versed with Adobe illustrator.
  • Be organized and pay close attention to details.
  • Work and deliver on firm deadlines.
  • Work independently and be self-motivated.
  • Have strong communication skills and not be afraid to speak your mind and give your opinion.
  • Work well with others (or at least a small staff).
  • Be able to implement changes in your design without hurt feelings.

The Process:

Please submit (to lisa@weftmagazine.com) your resumé, your past experience with draft creation, a list of the programs you’re comfortable using, your work history as it applies, and 3 references by Oct 5, 2025. You’ll hear from us by Oct 15th. Our plan is to pick a few people and ask them to work for two hours to recreate drafts using the process and drafts we supply along with implementing any needed changes (essentially going through an abbreviated version of our process). We’ll pay each designer $100 to go through this process (for their time and work). For those who aren’t among our choices, if you want to go through the mock-up process too, you can, but we won’t be offering the stipend. The final decision should be made by Nov 7th!
